Getting rid of bulky items in Bridgend
Buying a new sofa, replacing your mattress or upgrading your fridge is exciting. Getting rid of the old one is not. Large household items are awkward to move, difficult to transport and often too big for a family car.
You can sell or donate items in good condition, use Bridgend County Borough Council’s bulky waste service, or book a licensed collector such as Vohmann’s to collect and dispose of them for you.

Can you put a sofa or mattress out with your normal rubbish?
No. Large items such as sofas, mattresses and fridges cannot simply be left out with your normal household bin collection. They need to be collected through a suitable bulky waste service or taken to a facility that accepts them.
Leaving furniture on the pavement without an authorised collection can also cause problems and may be treated as fly-tipping.
Option 1: Sell or donate your old furniture
If your sofa, bed or furniture is still in good condition, someone else might be able to use it. Local charities, second-hand furniture shops and online marketplaces are worth considering.
Not all furniture can be donated. Upholstered items may need to meet fire safety requirements, and damaged or heavily worn items may not be accepted. If your furniture is beyond reuse, you will need another solution.
Option 2: Use your local council’s bulky waste service
Your local council may offer a bulky household waste collection. This can be useful if you only have one or two items to remove, although charges, accepted items and collection arrangements vary.
Check with Bridgend County Borough Council for the latest information.
Option 3: Book a professional bulky waste collection
If you do not want to struggle with heavy furniture or arrange transport, professional collection is often the easiest option. Vohmann’s Waste Management collects a wide range of bulky household items, including:
- Sofas and armchairs
- Mattresses and bed frames
- Wardrobes and other furniture
- Fridges and freezers
- Washing machines and appliances
- Garden furniture
You do not need a house full of rubbish to book. Our single item collection covers individual items too.
Why fridges and freezers need special disposal
Old fridges and freezers need particular care because they contain refrigerants and other materials that must be handled correctly. They should not be treated as ordinary household rubbish.
Using an appropriate collection service means your appliance goes to a suitable facility for treatment and recycling.
